We are all faced with those times when we need to make renovations in our house. Sometimes those renovations are really needed or an emergency. Sometimes we just want to change something or add an extension to our home.

We were in that position last summer when we finally bought the other half of our house from my husband’s parents. We finally had the whole house to ourselves, and we really needed to change a few things to make it more usable and appealing to us.

We decided to do some things ourselves and hire a carpenter to do the more complicated jobs. It wasn’t such a big renovation, but we still had to consider one extra cost: waste disposal. Regular city garbage removal does not take away renovation waste. We needed to consider skip bin hire in our budget from the beginning because it’s the unplanned things that often get to us.

In our case skip bin hire was included in the budget from day one, and we had no surprises when it was time to get rid of all the waste.

We had a few important changes and repairs that we wanted to make, but in the end our budget allowed us to include some more that were in our wish list, since we didn’t know if we could afford them all. skip bin hire was actually less than what we expected so the money we saved was put into some more repairs that were not that urgent but we still wanted done.

The more expensive renovation was to redo our roof. It needed to be done because we were already getting some water inside when it rained. But it was expensive and there was a lot of waste. For that job we had to hire professionals. We wouldn’t know where to start and it’s something one needs to have done properly.

We did take down the little addition at the back ourselves. Hubby and a few friends build it up again, this time properly and with the dimensions we wanted. That wasn’t as expensive as the roof, but we need to consider that we paid basically for the materials. The work was done by hubby and his friends and all they wanted for pay was to have beers around and nice meals after work.

Other small renovations and changes were done, and the whole process took us about 6 weeks. But when it was finished we knew it had been worth. We love the new look in our house.

It was a bit expensive when we added what we had to pay for the carpenter, the roofing company, the skip bin hire and the materials, but we still saved some money on the things we did ourselves, and the result was incredible, our house looks great now and we won’t need to spend that much money again for a long time.
