It was a Saturday, and I was bored. I called up my friends, but they were bored too. I'd already done my homework (really boring stuff, really) and I'd watched all of the YouTube videos that people had posted. I wanted something different.
I moped about, hoping that somewhere, somehow, I could find something fun to do. I checked out the local barn. Horses. They stood there and... stood... there. There was a sign up:
"No touching the horses." I almost wished it has said "Hold your horses" because at least then I could touch them, albeit when holding too much weight for my arms.
There was an old car in the back. It was a skeleton of a thing. You could see all of its insides. Its motor was missing; it was probably being used for a tractor somewhere. Then an idea occurred to me: I could be a farm-boy!
I walked up to the door and knocked. The window of the door opened.
"Yes?" The man was looking up, over me.
"Down here." The man slowly looked down.
"Oh... hi there, little lad. Anything I can do for you?" I could see a white beard. Most of it was hidden from view, but it looked like he was up there in years. He was a sketchy man, the kind of look that you would expect for a farmer.
"Yes. I'd like to be a farm-boy."
"Farm-boy?" he asked, clearly puzzled.
"Yes, a farm-boy. I want to run your tractors and help tend the fields." He looked me up and down.
"You're a city boy." I smiled.
"So... I get the job?" He frowned.
"No... that's not what I meant. I mean, you're a city boy - you don't know what it takes to be a farmer."
"Well then - teach me! I'm willing to learn!"
"No!" The man shouted, immediately realizing that his harsh words had taken effect, and that he hadn't meant to sound so harsh. He went away from his window, and I moped. All I had wanted was an instructor! I would have let him have all of the profits. I am a city boy, after all.
After a moment, he was back at the window.
"So you're serious about this?"
"Yes," I answered. "All I need is an instructor, and I think you'd be good at that. You can have all the profits."
"A price skip hire, eh?"
"Yes, a price skip hire. You'll be the instructor, and I would be the student."
"Do you know how to operate a motor vehicle?"
"A motorvehicle! Of course I do!"
"Alright. You're hired." He took a look at me. "Now stop moping around."
"I moped? Nah!" A piercing glare from his eyes silenced me. And the work began.
